Franche-Comté is the former County of Bourgogne. Until the Treaty of Nimégue (1678) there were two Bourgogne, one to the west of the Saône, the Duchy of Bourgogne, capital Dijon and the other to the east, the County of Bourgogne, capital Dole in the region of the Holy Roman Empire, then Spain....
